Stress Foods

Happy holidays from all of us here at Living Health Integrative Medicine! Do you get stressed around the holidays? For some it’s the most wonderful time of the year. It brings joy and togetherness but can also create feelings of depression and anxiety for many due to added financial burden, family obligations, and trying to manage a healthy lifestyle among all of the temptations at holiday parties. Below I’ve created a list of a few stress busting foods to help you make this the happiest season of all.

Spinach– Spinach is high in in magnesium which can help relax muscles, nerves, and promote a sense of calming. Spinach is also a great source of folate (vitamin B9), that has been shown to lower risk of depression and anxiety.

Turkey– Turkey is a good source of the amino acid tryptophan- a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is involved in regulating mood.

Blueberries– Antioxidants called anthocyanins that give this fruit it’s deep blue color have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and neuroprotective benefits. Blueberries are also a good source of Vitamin C which is important in times of stress to support the adrenals and healthy cortisol levels as well as boosting the immune system.

Salmon– This cold water fish is high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oil is a good source of EPA and DHA which are essential for brain cell membranes and reducing brain inflammation. Omega 3’s have also been shown to reduce high cholesterol, improve resiliency to stress, and improve symptoms of anxiety and depression. Reducing foods high in pro-inflammatory Omega-6 fatty acids such as refined vegetable oils can also help maintain a balance of these fatty acids.

Almonds– Almonds are high in Vitamin B2, Vitamin E, magnesium, biotin, and fiber which make this food cardio-protective, helpful for controlling blood sugar levels, and lowering blood pressure. Almonds are also an easy snack to have on hand while shopping or traveling.
